Ants

Ants are becoming the important household insect pests after mosquitoes, rodents and cockroaches in Singapore. Ants are nuisance pests and potential mechanical vectors of diseases, e.g. transmitting pathogenic micro-organisms e.g. Salmonella, Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus in hospital environment.

Bedbugs

Bedbugs which were common in Singapore in the 50s and 60s, has been suddenly emerging as a serious pest problem in recent years, in particular, in hotels and also in public housing estates. The possible reasons for the meteoric rise in bedbug infestations could be due to increasing trend of international of travelling and public seeking accommodation. Other possible reasons could be due to resistance to pesticides, re-cycling of used furniture and clothing which may enhance the spreading of bedbugs. The bugs’ ability to live several weeks without feeding facilitates this method of dispersal.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are one of the most common and important household insect pests in Singapore. Cockroaches require warmth, food and shelter to survive and breed. Some co-habit with humans and saprophagous and nocturnal in nature. The habit of cockroaches defaecating and regurgitating their partially digested food while feeding makes them the ubiquitous insect pest of contamination. They are known to carry strains of poliomyelitis, pathogenic bacteria, and the eggs of pathogenic worms.

Bees, hornets & wasps

Although bees, wasps and hornets are greatly feared by man they are beneficial insects. In fact, bees are most important pollinators of plants, especially trees. Without their nectar and pollen-collecting activities, much of our forested land would be bare and our fruit trees barren.

Fleas

Fleas are ectoparasites of bird and mammals. Adult fleas have piercing mouth parts and feed exclusively on blood, so they must find a warm-blooded host to survive and reproduce. Fleas are of medical and veterinary importance due both irritation from flea bites and to their role in transmitting disease agents e.g. plague and murine typhus.

Flies

There are several species of flies that are regular pests inside and around the house and other structures in Singapore. The common Houseflies and other filth-flies have been implicated in the mechanical transmission of pathogen causing diseases to man largely due to their breeding and feeding habits. In great or moderate numbers, flies can be a nuisance especially in food establishments as its presence projects an impression of unhygienic conditions. Important diseases that may be transmitted by flies include cholera, conjunctivitis, dysentery, trachoma,typhoid and myiasis.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are an important group of arthropods that feed on human and animals for blood. Adult mosquitoes when present in large numbers not only cause public health nuisance, but some of them remain the most important insect vectors in Singapore.

Rodents (Rats & mice)

Rodents are the most destructive vertebrates on earth to human property and probably the most medically important vertebrates to human health. They are responsible for transmitting many human diseases such plague, leptospirosis, murine typhus, rat-bite fever, salmonellosis (food poisoning) etc. Rodents are also responsible for causing enormous economic losses. They consume or contaminate vast quantities of food with their urine, droppings and hairs, destroy other expensive household items and by setting fire on whole buildings through gnawing the insulation of electric wires.

Termites

Termites are the most important household pests. They feed on wood and paper material and cause serious damages to building structure and furniture. Termites are social insect. They live in colonies and there is division of labor, similar to bees, wasps and ants. In search for woods, termites enter buildings through hairlines cracks and can cause serious damages to your properties.
